SPECKLED HEN TAVERN
Atmosphere - We were looking for a place to have a quick bite of dinner and watch some of the Yankees vs Twins game and went to The Speckled Hen Tavern & Grill on Philips. As you walk in the doors, the decor is what one would expect from a pub (although this establisment describes itself as a gastropub), with highbacked wooden booths, brick and tall ceilings. The main dining area is placed just as you enter with the bar area towards the back. There is also a separate dining/bar area. The TV screens are placed such that from any angle a game can be watched. The noise level was minimal - no loud patrons or loud music - so to have a conversation is possible!
Menu - Imagine a pub with a "Southern" twist - this is what the Speckled Hen is about. For dinner, they have specials and last night it was seafood. The menu itself is varied and creative (click here to see menu) We had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken with the baked Mac N Cheese and braised collard greens (we substituted this with creamed corn) The fried chicen was great - the crust was crunchy, golden brown yet not oily. The baked mac n' cheese was pretty good but the creamed corn side we did not like it, mailnly because of the texture. I had the Root Beer Glazed Bone In Pork Chop with Roasted Garlic Whipped Potatoes, substituted the Black Eye Pea Salad with Red Beans and Rice. I enjoyed ths very much! The pork chop was juicy and tender; the root beer glaze gave a hint of sweetness. The whipped potatoes were pretty good and went well with the porkchop. The red beans and rice was very good!
Service - The service was good. Our beverages came out quickly and our food didn't take long at all. Our server, Patrick, knew the menu very well and was able to help guide us with our dinner options. Overall, we had a pretty good experience there and will return if we are in the area.
