III FORKS STEAKHOUSE
Atmosphere: III Forks is located in Tapestry Park (Southside.) There is community parking near the Aloft Hotel but if you prefer, use their valet. After dropping off your car, you enter from the back and walk along the corridor, passing the main dining rooms, a glassed "wine cellar", and to the hostess station. Past the station, you pass smaller dining rooms and then into a large bar area with lounge seating and also tables. Keep going past the bar and you will be in their outdoor seating area. High ceilings, beautiful wood paneling, and fire features make the atmosphere warm, upscale and cozy. The bar is a popular meeting place with good bar pours, an extensive wine list (presented to you in an ipad - nice touch !), and, the best scotch menu I have yet seen in Jacksonville...single malts and steaks, yes!
Menu: (View Menu) As you would expect, there are the steaks, seafood, and local favorites. For appetizers, we had the Beef Croustades, Crabcake St. Francis, and the Seafood Medley.
The Beef Croustades were tender, delicious and light. Tenderlion served atop a piece of toast and the sauce complimented the beef very well. Loved it so much, I ate all but 2 pieces that my companions graciously saved me from.
The Crabcake St. Francis was very good. The lump crabcake was a good portion and the accompanying salsa salad went very well with it. We asked for a side of Remoulade sauce... While the quality of meat was very good, a little more seasoning would have made it the perfect crabcake.
The Seafood Medley was also enjoyed...a piece of bacon wrapped scallop, a mini crabcake, and a very large shrimp. Overall an excellent appetizer
For our Entrees, we had the Bone In Rib Eye, Fillet Mignon, and Lamb Chops. To accompany our meals, we had the 6 cheese potatoes (all sides are large enough to feed 2-3 people.) All of our entrees were cook perfectly to our specifications.
I am a huge fan of good lamb chops that are prepared well. I was not disappointed with my choice. By far, III Forks have the best lamb chops I've had in all the steakhouses in town! The mustard sauce and the reduction balanced the chops nicely.
The quality of the meat for all our entrees were very good. The fillet and rib eyes were tender an juicy, but the best in town...I'm not quite sure but comparable to the more established steakhouses.
For dessert, we sampled 4 desserts. NY Cheesecake, Creme Brulee, Bread Pudding, and an Orange Cake. All excellent (and HUGE.) I especially enjoyed the Creme Brulee...yum!
The quality and presentation of all our food was on target.
Service: Seating was prompt. Our waiter came promptly to our table to present the ipad wine list and take our drink orders. After reviewing the wine list, we narrowed down our choices to 2 bottles of wine that none of us had tried and was looking forward to tasting it. Needless to say, we were shocked when our waiter told us that we could not sample the bottled wine - but he would be happy to let us sample a "glass" wine. In my opinion, if a place is going to mark up wine by 100-200% it would be a wise practice to allow as many upscale restaurants do! Not to mention we probably would have consumed 2 bottles between us. So we ended up ordering other spirits. Meals were served just as we were finishing our 1st cocktail. It was interesting to note that our side dish was not served onto our plates when other tables around us were.
The food is excellent, drink selection, good, and the service is inconsistent. However, if you can overlook the service, III Forks is a place that I will return to and recommend.
